Lake Mead National Recreation Area is both massive and diverse, and is the country’s first national recreation area. With huge plateaus, magnificent canyons, expansive desert, and over 700 miles of shoreline, there’s a lifetime of experiences to have here. Lake Mead is also home to the world-famous Hoover Dam, one of the highest dams on the planet.
Lake Mead National Recreation Area also includes massive expanses of desert wilderness. In fact, more than 80% of the recreation area is considered desert. Some of the best hiking and desert backcountry access can be found here, so don’t forget to bring your hiking boots!
